The soft autumn swaps

Soft autumn colors to avoid, and the swaps

Black and stark white each have a soft autumn replacement, and so does cobalt. Keep what you own and change the color nearest your face.

Six tops on a wooden closet rail in three pairs, a black cardigan beside an olive cardigan, a bright white shirt beside a warm ivory shirt, and a cobalt blouse beside a deep teal blouse.

The main soft autumn colors to avoid each have a named replacement in the twelve-color soft autumn palette. You can swap the color near your face instead of removing the garment from your closet.

The swaps

Three hard colors, and the soft autumn color to wear instead.

The left chip in each pair is the avoided color, drawn from the Bright Winter palette. The right chip is its replacement from the soft autumn palette.

Black to Olive

Nothing in the twelve-color soft autumn palette is near black. Olive is one of its two darkest colors.

A genuine close neighbor. You keep the light look without the cool white.

Cobalt to Deep Teal

A swap by color family. Deep Teal is the only soft autumn color on the blue side.

Can a soft autumn wear black?

Yes, but a black piece is usually easier to wear away from your face. Choose Olive when you want a dark color at the neckline. Deep Teal is the other dark option in this twelve-color palette.

The Concept Wardrobe puts it bluntly: "Black near your face will make you look aged and unhealthy." The same guide says skin "may appear yellowish" against true black.

Nothing in the twelve-color soft autumn palette is near black. Olive and Deep Teal are the two darkest colors in the pack. The Concept Wardrobe lists dark greens among its own replacements for black, so Olive is the first choice here.

Try an Olive turtleneck instead of a black one. You still get a dark frame around your face, but the color comes from the warm side of this palette. If Olive is not your favorite, try the same garment in Deep Teal.

Olive stands in for black and Deep Teal for cobalt. Terracotta covers bright red. The fabric sits near those palette colors rather than matching them exactly.

What should replace stark white?

Warm Ivory is the direct replacement for stark white. It is a genuine close neighbor, unlike the swaps for black or cobalt blue. You keep the light look without putting a cool white at the neckline.

The Concept Wardrobe calls true white "too harsh and too cool" for soft autumn coloring. Its light neutrals are yellowish instead, and the first one it names is a yellowish off-white. That is the place Warm Ivory holds in this palette.

Replace a stark white button-down with a Warm Ivory shirt. In the mirror, look at the skin around your eyes and mouth in each one. The softer of the two is the one to keep near your face.

You do not need to treat every white item alike. A white skirt sits well away from your face. The useful change is at the neckline, not across every shelf in your closet.

What can replace cobalt blue?

Deep Teal is the practical swap for cobalt blue. Nothing in the twelve-color soft autumn palette is close to cobalt. Deep Teal is the choice because it is the palette's only color on the blue side, not because it looks similar.

Soul of Color puts cobalt blue on its soft autumn avoid list. Its reason for the whole list is that "bright and cool colors are too harsh for your muted, warm palette." The Concept Wardrobe says deep purples and blues "will make you disappear."

If you own a cobalt sweater, try the same kind of sweater in Deep Teal. It is darker and much less bright than cobalt. That puts it closer to the rest of your soft autumn clothes.

So this swap works by color family. Deep Teal does not closely match cobalt, and you will see the difference on the hanger.

Which other bright colors are on the avoid list?

Soul of Color lists six colors to avoid for soft autumn, as checked September 24, 2026. It also names Bright Winter as the opposite season. The table gives each one with its source and the soft autumn color to wear instead.

These pairings came from measuring each avoided color against the nine clothing colors in the soft autumn palette. The other three are metals. When nothing measured close, the choice followed color family. Bright Purple has no replacement because the twelve-color pack contains no purple. The free color analysis gives you a longer personal palette of about twenty colors, which can include a softened black and a smoky plum. Those are muted versions, not the bright colors on this list.

Do these colors need to leave your closet?

No. Stella's Wardrobe says the avoided families "should stay out of your closet," and that goes too far. Soul of Color itself says avoiding a color "doesn't mean you can never wear these colors."

The Concept Wardrobe's warning about black is about black near your face. That leaves plenty of room for clothes you already own. Keep the black cardigan or white shirt, then change what sits closest to your face.

Every swap on this page was looked up against the soft autumn palette, so you are swapping a color rather than losing one.

What to do with the ones already in your closet

Keep black trousers and black shoes. A white skirt can stay too. These pieces sit well below your face, away from the spot The Concept Wardrobe warns about.

A black cardigan lies open over a terracotta silk blouse on a linen bed with black trousers below it and a camel scarf beside it.
Keep the black, move it down

Every black piece here stays. The terracotta blouse fills the neckline, so the color nearest the face comes from the soft autumn palette.

For a black cardigan, wear a Warm Ivory or Terracotta top underneath. Leave enough of the top visible around the neckline. You will see the pack color nearest your skin while the cardigan stays part of the outfit.

You can use the same approach with a white shirt. Place a Camel or Sage scarf at the neckline. If you prefer an open shirt, wear it over a Camel top so the warmer color shows near your face.

Check the result in daylight before buying anything. Take one photo with the avoided color at your neckline. Take another with the pack color in between, then compare the skin around your eyes and mouth.

Try this at home

Same light. Same spot. Change the fabric.

Face a window with soft daylight. Compare one fabric at a time, keeping everything else the same.

Soft autumn can be confused with nearby seasons. The soft autumn and true autumn comparison helps when warmth looks clear but softness is uncertain. The soft autumn and soft summer comparison is useful when softness looks clear but warmth is harder to judge.

If you are not sure you are a soft autumn, the free color analysis asks five questions about your coloring and shows your season with a palette of colors to try.

Tomorrow, take out the black cardigan and put a Warm Ivory top under it.
